Before I report this I wanted to make sure I am not missing something. I have a multi class character 6th level fighter, 3rd level Wizard. I chose a Chain Shirt so to not have disadvantage on stealth rolls. I have an 18 Dex. So I should have an AC of 17 I beleive, but I am only getting a 15. WHen I click on my AC on my sheet it says Dex bonus Max 2. ANy chance becuase of Wizard multi class? or is it something else. I am sure I am just missing a rule that I am not aware of but if someone knows please let me know. Thank you.
Medium armours, like the chain shirt, have a maximum dexterity bonus of +2 for the AC, which means, no matter how high is your DEX score, you can add a maximum of +2 to your AC due to dexterity. Heavy armours do not allow to add the dexterity modifier to your AC.
All the information are found in this section of the PHB.
As filcat states, medium armour limits how much of your AC bonus you can apply to your AC to +2.
Given your Dex of 18, you would be better off with either Studded Leather (16 AC), more expensive medium armour like a breastplate (16 AC, no stealth disadvantage), half-plate (17 AC, stealth disadvantage) or, given you have Wizard levels, Mage Armour spell (17 AC).
Studded Leather and Mage Armour will allow you to use your full Dex modifier so when you get your Dex to 20 your AC will increase to 17 and 18, respectively. Alternatively, the Medium Armour Master feat will allow you to increase the maximum Dex modifier for medium armour to +3 and negate any stealth disadvantage allowing you to sneak around in Half-plate with an AC of 18.
Great information that, once again I can not believe I missed. I had thought I read it well which is why I chose the armor that did not give disadvantage to stealth. I often fail investigation checks. Thank you!
