I'm aware that familiars summoned with Find Familiar typically have their creature type replaced by either Celestial, Fey or Fiend, but due to the way the Strixhaven book talks about the mascots (with the exception of the Pest, it talks about them as if they only exist as familiars), I was wondering if they're a special exception and keep their original creature types. Like, if they only exist as familiars, why give them creature types outside of the typical familiar creature types. I don't know if there's an official ruling or not, but if there is, I'd really appreciate a link, cause this is the sort of thought that could turn into a heated debate with my D&D group (it's not relevant to our current campaign or party members, but we fairly regularly discuss D&D outside the context of our campaign).
My understanding is that most are created using "magic" but not "spells" like how owlbear or lich are created using magic, but there isn't a spell for it (*in 5th edition).
The ones conjured using find familiar via the strixhaven mascot feat follow the normal rules for find familiar other than what the feat specifically says, including that they become celestial, fey, or fiend instead of beast.
Actually, I just noticed the "instead of beast" and now I have to check on pact of the chain. Basically, as long as DM is consistent, I don't think it makes much difference.
I suppose that raises a follow-up question of if there's a way for player characters to create one using that same "magic, but not a spell" system. There's lot of potential fun to be had through creative application of a construct companion.
