well if that's the case, if they open their eyes are they not frightened? Whats to say they just open and close their eyes? would you just give them the blind condition for this one round, and on the next round they would be not frightened ?
They are always frightened if the source/feature/spell of the frightened condition is still active. Closing the eyes does not get rid of the frightened condition. Also, being blinded is even worse than the frightened condition.
So then, what do you consider acceptable for a creature to not be on line of sight with your source of fear
Get behind a rock, head around a corner, cast a wall of stone between the creature and you. Anything that physically blocks you from the creature will take away the disadvantage. Closing your eyes, or hiding behind a shield doesn't hide you at all.

My dog confirms this. When I call him out for doing something bad he gets frightened. Then he looks away from me until the condition wears off. But he knows when he has to look at me again, the frightened condition will start right back up again where it left off.

This made more sense and explained the condition better than anything I've read about how frightened works.

I'm confused on the mechanics of frightened. What occurs? Do enemies make a saving throw at the beginning or end of their turn?
For the duration and when the saving throw must be made, you need to the check the source of the frightened condition.
As examples, the spell Cause Fear allows the target to do the save at the end of its turn, whereas spell Fear allows the save only when it is cast.
What is considered out of sight. I can see my players just saying that they close their eyes, or turn around once to get rid of their fear
Well, if a character averts or closes the eyes from a target, I would treat that as a blinded condition.

If the question is how to avoid the first item of the frightened condition without repercussions on the attack rolls, I do not see any.
If the source of fear is not in the line of sight, the character is effectively blinded against the source of fear.
The character must try to get advantage against the source of fear, to counter-balance the disadvanatge of the frightened or blinded conditions.
