So as the everyone knows; there's tanks, dps and healers. There will be people that say these roles don't exist anymore....that they're a product of MMOs and other games. 5E still has them. People will want to make tank builds, DPS builds, healer/support builds:
Tank, "I'm not making a difference, all I'm doing is taking hits! I'll just make tactical decisions to maximize my damage."
Healer, "I'm not making a difference, all I'm doing is using my crappy damage spells and tossing small heals on people that are making death saves."
DPS, "I was making a difference, but I can't tank and the healer was using his crappy damage spells instead of healing me!"
So the tank build takes hits....but wants to do more than be a sponge. Healer's want to support the party, but contribute as well. DPS build says, "I made a DPS build, I'm killing stuff."
Anyone who says that a tank or healer isn’t making a huge contribution is short sighted. Keeping a Rogue who is doing tons and tons of damage on her feet is just as important, and just as much fun, as doing the damage yourself is.
The holy trinity is a basis that is there but the Dm and players can alter the dynamic in dnd 5e. What’s the tank going to do with flying creatures with spells. Whats the healer going to do if a bridge collapses and the party is plunging to their death. What does dps do if your sneaking past an army camp or trying to convince agreendragon to leave when your low level.
