I recognize my knowledge is limited both from years ago and now. BUT, I find very few magic items called "amulet" only 10 or 12 items over all rarities. I guess I thought there were many more than this, probably based on computer games, etc. Curious why there's such a limited focus on what I would have considered an important type of magical item, at least similar to Rods, which gets its own category in the magic item search engine. Any thoughts on this? Why not have more amulets?
Amulets are not a distinct type of magic item like rings and are instead found among Wondrous items. Many amulets published in previous editions haven't been in 5E or may now be found under different items such as rings, scarab, brooch cloak etc
A general review of magical items was undertaken and so they made a lot of changes to the basics of magic items. For those of us who played in the 1 and 2e eras, it can be a bit of a shock.
Amulets can be anything. They can be rings, bracelets, coins, armbands , necklaces, etc. The same applies to talismans -- the terms are meant more for an item that is meant to achieve a particular purpose. That is, the "word for a magical item" is, technically, Amulet, Talisman, Periapt, or Charm. The shape and form of that magical item is not bound into a particular thing. For assorted reasons, they often moved a bit away from using the word Charm because of how that interfaces with certain mechanics, but also the introduction of attunement as a limiting factor also has an effect.
So, in the end, they just went with that. That doesn't mean you can't go deeper. Perhaps Amulets have a special role in your world, distinct from Talismans or Periapts. Perhas you want to classify them all as different kinds of magical items, according to some purpose that makes sense on your world.
Up to you.

Thanks for the clarification. Didn't know about the terminology changes.
