What is the point of gaming sets?

It should be noted that this is a change introduced in the 5.5e rules. Tables still using the 5e rules might not do it this way.

Actually, the concept crops up in the Xanathar's Guide to Everything section on Tool Proficiencies as well. Still optional, just worth noting that it's been out there in official material since well before the 2024 update.
