I started making a character based on UA 2021: Folk of the Feywild’s Owlfolk, then was shifted to the Olwin by my GM. But they’re not the same. They are definitely similar, but they are not the same. So I was looking for the information again and I can find, quite easily in fact. Just not here. On this site, so dedicated to everything D&D 5E. Last I checked the information I want is WOTC sanctified. So why is it that it is not listed here. Why is the race not available for character creation?
I just started gaming again and am relearning the rules. It’s different from 1E let me tell you. And my mind isn’t is flexible as it was then either, it 30 years of crust to break-up.
Like I said Owlfolk and Owlin are similar but with two differences. Owlfolk have in addition Silent Feathers which give a proficiency in Stealth, Flying at walking speed and 120’ Darkvision but Nimble Flight which is an Acrobats proficiency Dex +1 and Magic Sight. The difference being the Owlfolk are direct decendents living in the Feywild while the Owlin are a Subrace that no longer live in the Feywild. That is my opinion.
What bothers me is the absence of this periodical from your site. What does bother me is what appears to be the skipping of information for the sake of other information, like the Strixhaven: A Curriculum Of Chaos release. I don’t know if higher authorities had any say in this. I can’t lay any blame. I point imaginary fingers at no-one at all till the my imaginary cows come home too, for all good it will do me. Yes I’m defusing this.
I just want to know why an apparently official WOTC UA2021release was never published and applied to your services here.
The material in an UA (Unearthed Arcana) is playtest material, so isn't officially released, which is clearly stated at the very start of the document. I've copied the relevant statement below:
This Is Playtest Material The material in this article is presented for playtesting and to spark your imagination. These game mechanics are in draft form, usable in your campaign but not refined by full game design and editing. They aren’t officially part of the game and aren’t permitted in D&D Adventurers League events.
The Owlfolk in the UA you referenced was the playtest for what became the Owlin based on the feedback received. Also not everything that goes through the playtest process ends up being published.
As for UA being published here, there used to be in the past, but it took a lot of work to add each of the options, and given they would regularly change significantly from the playtest version, or end up scrapped entirely, they stopped doing. Even then, once the playtest period was over they would remove those UA options anyway.
Thank you for your reply. I will admit i’m not aware or privy to the inner workings and decision making that makes the final print. I would certainly like to be that’s for damn sure. I’m sure it would worth the migraines I already get.
But I did really like the original build of the Owlfolk and would actually have given them True Sight instead of Magic Sight. They are wise and all seeing after all.
I do thank you again for helping this OG Gamer catch up a little and look forward to enjoying to traveling worlds never ventured once more with new companions.
