Seems pretty straightforward to me. The aura specifies that while they are frightened of you they are hindered. Some effects, like Wrathful Smite, specify that the target is frightened of you, so they would work with the aura. The Fear spell does not specify that they are frightened of you, so it does not work with the aura.
Aura of Conquest works with fear. It's the reason Oath of Conquest paladins are granted that spell in the first place. The designer's intent in this case is blatantly obvious.
How does that confirm your position? If anything the exact words "You're meant to have that choice: paralyze them with fear or cause them to flee because of it." indicates that there is a deliberate choice of either using the Channel Divinity to make them afraid of you so they stay in one place, or the Fear spell to make them generally afraid and run away from you.

Read the entire thread. It's clear that Jeremy is not contradicting the interpretation that targets affected by fear are unable to move as a result of Aura of Conquest. The questioner is in fact complaining that the fear spell interacts with Aura of Conquest in this way.
Taking these things out of context is how you end up with these counterintuitive rules interpretations in the first place.
Fear Spell: You project a phantasmal image of a creature's worst fears. ... [on a failed save] the target becomes Frightened for the Duration. While Frightened by this spell, a creature must take the Dash action and move away from you ...
So ... if a light bulb "projects light", the source of the light is the light bulb. Same thing here; except instead of "light" it is "fear" and instead of "a light bulb" it is "you"). While the spell does not explicate state you are the source, it is explicate that YOU are projecting the their fear. Contrast this to wording of Phantasmal Killer ...
Phantasmal Killer Spell: [You] ... create an illusory manifestation of its deepest fears, visible only to that creature ...
In this instance, you are creating an illusion (rather than self-projecting), and therefore, it may be reasonable for one to consider the option that the source of the fear is the illusion, rather than you. But for the case of the Fear spell, not a chance; you are absolutely the source.
Yup. Fear makes them frightened and forces them to run as far and as fast as they can. Aura of Conquest makes them unable to run. It's a nasty combination in more ways than one.
There's a wrinkle in the Fear spell: you're not actually the source of their fear; you're projecting an image of their deepest fears. It's arguably not you that they're running from.
What if I'm it's deepest fear....?

I am one with the Force. The Force is with me.

We can just use deductive reasoning here.
