Are there any spells or items which dampen light? In game terms I'm talking about something which reduces bright light to dim and dim to (natural) darkness?
As a shadow monk, you already have access to the Darkness spell. Consider taking a feat to access Warlock Eldritch Invocations and take Devil's Sight to see in magical and natural darkness.
Is that legal, RAW? I think the prerequisite for that feat is that you're a spell caster, and though Shadow Monks have access to some spells via their Shadow Arts powers, I don't think they qualify?
You would need to multiclass to a class that has either the spellcasting feature or the pact magic feature. You cannot do it if you are solely a monk.
Yes, that seems to be true. Forgot that prerequisite. 😄
Well if it interests you, ranger revised is a killer combo for shadow monk if it's allowed. You should start with ranger for better profis if still possible. You'd need two levels for spellcasting, though.
A while ago they released UA ranger for One Dnd playtest, and I think it got spells from level 1.
1 level ceric or druid dip works too.

Hey,

Looking for something for my Shadow Monk.
Cheers!
