I was unclear and and only partialy correct. The table I referenced is for multiclassing. The effect of the feat is similar. A fighter with this feat would have what you could call a feat slot of the same general character as the multi-class table. I think most DM' would just "once per long rest." Allthough Ithink this should always be the GMs call. sorry for the confusion
Could you take the two cantrips from different classes? or do you have to stick to one class when choosing which cantrips/spells you get
When you pick the Magic Initiate feat you choose one of the listed classes. You must use that classes spell list when picking both cantrips and the 1st level spell. Also the class you pick determines what ability score you use when casting the spells granted by this feat.
If I understand the question correctly, a warlock with Magic Initiate{warlock), can cast the chosen 1st level spell once at 1st level, resetting after a long rest. But he may also cast it normally using an available spell slot.
It is as if the feat provides a dedicated 1st level spell slot that can only be used for that specific 1st level spell.

Or am I in error?
This is correct, though only if the class you pick for the Magic Initiate feat is a class you have levels in.
If you don't have levels in the class you pick for the feat then you only get the one "free" casting per long rest.
Do you use your own spell save dc for magic initiate or do you use the dc given?, its not really specified on the feat and idk what I should do. I'm in a high level campaign and the spell save is very low.

It depends on what you mean by "the DC given."
