For Teleport or Misty step, it is defined that way. But Dimension Door targets a point in space instead. It arbitrarily works differently from those other teleportation spells.
There's very little difference in the language between the three spells. None of them say they "target a point in space"
Misty Step
Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see.
Dimension Door
You teleport yourself from your current location to any other spot within range.
Teleport
This spell instantly transports you and up to eight willing creatures of your choice that you can see within range, or a single object that you can see within range, to a destination you select.

Perhaps this discussion of Dimension Door, other teleportation spells, and how they work within the general rules of spellcasting could be taken to another thread?
I have thoughts I would like to contribute but I do not want to derail this thread.
The target chosen to be affected by those spells respectively are:
Dimension Door: You
Teleport: You and up to eight willing creatures...or a single object
Misty Step: You
This is getting tedious, but Dimension door's range doesn't target self like Misty step or have a range of 10ft to show it targeting the caster and willing creatures, like Teleport. Its range is 400ft... literally targeting the spot the character is teleported to. Like fireball, neither the caster nor effected enemies are "targets."
But we obviously disagree, so I guess we can just agree that actually ruling this way to nerf Dimension Door into the ground would be goofy for a DM to do whether its RAW or RAI.
