The spell states: You touch a length of rope that is up to 60 feet long. One end of the rope then rises into the air until the whole rope hangs perpendicular to the ground. At the upper end of the rope, an invisible entrance opens to an extradimensional space that lasts until the spell ends. The extradimensional space can be reached by climbing to the top of the rope....
Stress the perpendicular. So if you cast it near a cliff face then the rope could use the "ground" as the cliff face and be perpendicular to that thereby potentially using it as means to cross a chasm.
I feel like you'd have to stretch the meaning of the word "ground" to have it include a sheer cliff face.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

I’d allow it with a homebrew version of the spell…like “Hank’s rope trick” or something….the character either just learns the adaptation over a period of time, after so many castings of the regular spell, or after some downtime to tinker with it (maybe an adaptation of the training rules). Pure homebrew, but empowers the player a bit…plus tight rope walking is a thing so possibly allows some fun synergies with a dexterous rogue.
To me when we refer to the ground it's horizontal not a steep vertical surface of a cliff but i could see Rope Trick be usable on a walkable cliffside that need no climbing.
