Hello, quick question: if I have a multiclass wizard/fighter, is it possible to use the fighter ability "Action Surge" to cast spells. So in one turn, wizard action with spell and wizard bonus action with cantrip and then fighter ability "Action Surge" as another action to cast another spell. A total of 2 spells and a cantrip with the class combination in one turn.
You can use action surge as a wizard/fighter multiclass (provided at least 2 levels of fighter), but in your example you mention using a bonus action cantrip. If you use a bonus action spell, "You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action." A cantrip is still a spell, and even with action surge, it's still the same turn, so if you use your bonus action to cast anything, you'd only be able to use cantrips that turn. If you used your bonus action for something else, you could still do two leveled spells, or you could cast 3 cantrips or 1 leveled spell bonus action and 2 cantrips. Technically the wording above is a cantrip, but they're not writing the rules with multiclassing in mind, so I doubt a DM would quibble over a cantrip versus cantrips.
Yes, you can cast spells with the action granted by Action Surge. It's not clear how you plan to be casting a cantrip as a bonus action, though.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.

Thanks for your ideas!
In your example, this works if:
This is a cantrip with a casting time of an action
This is any spell with a casting time of a bonus action (in your example, a cantrip)
This is a cantrip with a casting time of an action

Note that in the playtest for 1DD, a fighter's Action Surge cannot be used on a Magic action, so while you can use it to cast spells in 5e, that may not be true in the future

Honestly, I think the BA casting rule is going away in the next revision anyway. They already addressed Action Surge for casting multiple spells, and they already rewrote the Quickened Spell metamagic. If someone wants to cast healing word and cure wounds in the same turn, I don't think the upcoming rules will care.
Just a hunch. The BA casting rule, while not all that complicated once you get a handle on it, is one of the most misunderstood and clumsy-to-describe rules in 5e when it comes to the general public.
I'm referring to the Bonus Action (BA) casting rule, which says that if you cast a spell with a casting time of a bonus action, then the only other spells you can cast on your turn before or after that are cantrips with a casting time of an action. This is the rule that plays the largest role in limiting what combination of spells the original poster can cast in their example.

"a cantrip" always kind of bugged me too, but Xanathar's guide clears up the wording. If you want to cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 bonus action, remember that you can’t cast any other spells before or after it on the same turn, except for cantrips with a casting time of 1 action.
"Not all those who wander are lost"
Skip the bonus action cantrip, and then Yes.
Action: Cast a Spell. Action Surge Action: Cast a Spell again.
Use Bonus Action on something else. But not a spell cast.
I got quotes!

What does BA-Casting role mean?
