Here's the Scenario: Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan has a General Feature: Poisonous Gas. The lower levels of the ruins are filled with poisonous gas. The gas is an amber color, and its area is lightly obscured. Anyone can tell that the gas is irritating, but it takes a successful DC 15 Intelligence (Nature) check to discern the gas’s toxicity. Flames in the gas sputter and glow redly, and any attempt to use natural means to ignite a fire has only a 50 percent chance of success. Fire used as a light source has an effective radius only half normal. A creature takes 3 (1d6) poison damage every hour it spends in the gas. The gas is light, so it accumulates closer to the ceiling. Inhabitants of the dungeon have immunity to the poisonous effect of the gas.
Player has an Orb of Shielding: (poison) An orb of shielding is a polished, spherical chunk of crystal or stone aligned to one of the planes of existence. If you're a spellcaster, you can use this orb as a spellcasting focus. If you're holding the orb when you take damage of the type associated with the orb's material, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage by 1d4 (to a minimum of 0). The materials and their associated damage types are listed in the Orb of Shielding table.
What's the RAW? Can the player literally use a reaction every round for 24 hours? (Seems super duper META). Can a reaction prevent a Persistent Envirnmental Effect?
Any link to a RAW interpretation would be awesome.

Yea it does but why not? Also I don't think he'd need to, you only take the damage once per hour and the Orb's reaction is only triggered when you take damage so you'd only need to actually use it at that once per hour moment.

Can't remember anything that explicitly cover this kind of situation so you'll just have to default to the general rules, an effect does what its text says, i.e deal damage once per hour and an item does what its description says, i.e prevent damage when it is taken. If you want to do anything special because of the persistent style of the effect then it would have to be a DM ruling (which seems appropriate here).
But what if the player Misses 1 round without a reaction? (you know,,, for science) What if the 24 hour duration comes up while he's sleeping? (again,,, for science).
Yeah, I usually am pretty good at finding the clear cut rules on these sorta things. But this one looks to fall into the "DM judgement" area.
But what if the player Misses 1 round without a reaction? (you know,,, for science)
As written, they only have to use a reaction when they take damage, so only once per hour.
What if the 24 hour duration comes up while he's sleeping? (again,,, for science).
If the hourly trigger comes up while sleeping, they can't use a reaction, since sleeping creatures have the unconscious (and thus incapacitated) condition.
Whether that breaks long rests probably is DM's call, but the rest is by-the-book.
As is often the case, the simplifications of reality needed to make the mechanics workable make things unrealistic. So it goes. If it bugs you, you can house-rule it.
But what if the player Misses 1 round without a reaction? (you know,,, for science)
The player only needs to take the reaction when he takes damage, i.e once per hour. If he doesn't/can't take the reaction at that time then he takes the full damage of course.
What if the 24 hour duration comes up while he's sleeping? (again,,, for science).
What 24 hour duration? The damaging effect happens once per hour, not once per day. As for what happens when you are asleep, well you can't take reactions while sleeping so that's that.

Really good question, don't think you'll find a RAW answer unfortunately.

Yea I have to agree with @jl8e here and additionally I think that both questions are incorrectly posed.
