Still somewhat new and want to pursue alchemy with my alchemist supplies. However I've been given 10 days downtime and am getting really confused about how to obtain Alchemists Fire and vials of Acid;
Can I just outright buy them with gp I have?
Do I need to have some specific ingredients to craft them?
Can I buy ingredients and then spend gp to craft them?
Just need some help understanding this step by step process and how to utilise my alchemy supplies.
So, the first thing to realize is that there’s essentially no rules for gathering materials; monsters don’t have specific components they drop, nor are there specifically designated plants, minerals, etc that you as a player can acquire on your own initiative. The second thing to know is that potions are a separate matter from acid and alchemist’s fire. The latter two are mundane equipment, whereas potions are magic items. Crafting magic items is something that it’s up to your DM to regulate, as the DM will then need to take those resources into account when planning further encounters. Regarding crafting mundane concoctions, the material in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything suggests you can spend gold in 50 gp increments to acquire materials, and then if you have alchemist tools prof you can create one unit of acid, alchemist’s fire, antitoxin, oil, perfume, or soap after a long rest, subtracting half that item’s cost from your stock of materials. This isn’t a hard core rule though, so run it by your DM if you want to implement it. Beyond that, it’s usually up to the player to ask if they can use their tool prof for a roll; in the case of alchemist tools, you might attempt to identify a strange substance or potion your party has encountered, determine if an alchemical concoction is the reason someone is displaying odd symptoms, safely handle hazardous materials, or suchlike. There’s very few hard rules for tools, particularly in core; they’re more something you need to feel out uses for at a given table/campaign.
