I've been trying to find out how elves are able to go into trances and I can't find out. Is it because of their fey ancestry (which doesn't fit because fairies don't trance) or is it a matter of learned technique (which I can't find mentioned)? I suppose it could be a combination of the two but half-elves don't have it so I'm a bit lost. Can anybody tell me how it works?
General mechanics-wise it’s a mix of physiology and mental discipline. Going by the largest source of setting specific lore- Forgotten Realms- it’s an aspect of how elven souls reincarnate, with trancing being how they connect to the memories of past lives, at least while they’re young.
Lore-wise it is something Corellon (the god of elves) did to/for them. They trance and it sorta lets them relive their life instead of sleep. So, basically, they were blessed by a god to have the trait.

I'm probably laughing.
It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.

A better question to ask is - why do humans/mammals need to sleep.
Until scientists answer that one, you have no business asking the first.
