Hello, I have a big question. If my arrows have seeds close to the tip and I hit them on the enemy, can I use Plant Growth on them? Does the spell deal any damage?
As always, ask your DM, but in short, you can cast it, but no on the damage. Spells that don’t do damage, in general, can’t be re-purposed to do damage. So, if it were me, I’d say the seeds fall off from the impact of hitting the target. But on your next turn, they would be a viable target for plant growth (assuming you’re in range of the spell.)
Would PG do anything in seeds? It says plants become thick and overgrown, but would you consider seeds as a plant? It hasn’t reached that stage of growth yet. Maybe it is a nitpick but definitely, as Xalthu said, ask your DM.
My first question is: why not just use the existing plants around your targets? haha Maybe you're in a dungeon or some environment where there's absolutely no plant life or seeds on the ground.
Okay, to directly respond to your question: first, the RAW of plant growth don't say that plants emerge from seeds--there's no reference to "seed" in the spell rules. So, your DM would need to approve this. Second, the plants would need to bury themselves into the body then grow, or just grow on the surface, of the target hit by the arrow. I'm not aware of any plants that grow from the body of an animal, but I'm not saying it's impossible. I suppose air plants grow on the surface of objects, so that may help your argument. But that's the second thing that would need DM approval. If your DM approved both of these conditions, however, the spell would be limited to a 100 ft radius, as the spell says. And the plants would only grow from the seeds on your arrows that hit a target, in contrast to every sq ft of the 100 foot radius specified in the spell. Last, I can confirm with the others that plant growth does no damage, just restricts movement. In short, if I were DM, I'd approve it. But you should know that as a player that your method of delivering the spell isn't as effective as the RAW spell unless you hit all targets (in the 100 ft radius).

I agree there would be no additional damage

Started playing 1e in the late 70s and stopped in the mid-80s. Started immersing myself into 5e in the last year.
