Working on creating a Sidekick. Using Tasha's Cauldron of Everything rules rather than Sidekick Rules in the Essentials Kit. Tasha's seems to be the newer core material.
Going with Dragonborn Healer (for reasons.) I start with a Level 1 with seems to fit Tasha's criteria that Sidekick have a CR of 1/2 or less. So it appears that the Sidekick does get Racial Traits. And as a Healer it pulls from both Cleric and Druid spell lists.
It appears, however, that a Healer Sidekick does not gain access to any Class Features, Cleric Domains, or Druidic Circles?
It also appears that any type Spellcaster Sidekick does level up. But does it level up in its magic? It would start out at Level 1with less available to it as compared to a full blown PC. But does it then gain access to higher level spells and more spell slots as it levels up? In reference to leveling up Tasha's only specifically mentions leveling up HP and Proficiency Bonuses.
So, does a Sidekick level up like a PC, but just simply continue to lag a little behind regular PCs?
Is a Sidekick doomed to remain forever severely stunted, only gaining HP and a proficiency or two?
Does a Sidekick have access to Class Features etc?
Obviously there is a LOT of room here for a DM to make a judgement call. But as I consider myself as still learning, I'm looking for some sort of consensus that would help enable me to play and DM at other different tables with relative ease.
Sidekicks are simplified characters. A Spellcaster sidekick gains the following class features as it gains levels in this class, as summarized on the Spellcaster table, which gains more spell. It gains the features listed under The Spellcaster.
