my character has misty step. If I were to grab onto an item held in the hand of a demon, could I grab the item as an action and then misty step as my bonus action. Would grabbing the item be a contested strength check? Would the item disappear with me as a held item using mistystep?
I’d want to avoid a situation where both of you hold it, because that can get really sticky in term of rules. So I’d treat it like a disarm. Your attack roll vs enemy’s athletics or acrobatics. If you win, it’s on the ground, if they win, they keep ahold of it. Once it’s on the ground, you can use your item interaction to pick it up. Then if you do have sole possession and you misty step, yes, it goes with you.

I'd rule an object is only considered worn or carried if in your space, meaning if another creature grab an object in your hand, you teleport with it, and if you grab it in someone else hand in it,s space, you don't teleport with it. And if an item in a unocupied space is held by you and another creature, sucessfully teleporting with it would need to first wrestle it away in a Strenght contest for it to get in your space and now be considered worn or carried.
Misty step doesn’t say the caster can bring worn or carried equipment with them. Are they intended to leave everything, including their clothes, behind?
No, the caster’s worn and carried equipment are intended to go with them. (misty step)

That’s not a bad way to do it. I might also consider having the demon make a Charisma saving throw against your spell save DC to resist your attempt to teleport away with the item.
A Sleight of Hand check might also be appropriate, depending on the situation or how you describe your attempt to grab the item. Perhaps using the demon’s passive perception as the DC (did they spot your intention?) or competing against their Sleight of Hand or a Strength check.
Yeah, you definitely shouldn't be able to just take an already-held item and teleport away with it. Any of the above are decent ways to handle it. I'd say any/all are valid.
-Disarm as an attack (using the rule in the DMG) to take the item with your action -Opposed Charisma check to teleport with the item as if it's in your possession (the check representing willpower over the item in question) -If unseen, Sleight of Hand vs Perception to gain more control over the item than the opponent
That said, it would be up to the DM to allow any of this at all.
I think there is a consensus forming around the idea that if they are wearing/carrying an item, then you should take possession of it before you try to misty step away with it, whatever form that takes. But if you are just touching a thing in another creature's possession, it doesn't come along with you.

When you cast misty step you teleport with all worn/carried items as confirmed in Sage Advice Compendium.
