When a character has advantage on a D20 test from multiple sources, can they select which source is applied? Some sources may be limited in number of times per day or carry a rider (e.g., tides of chaos in 2024). I see nothing specific on this in the new PHB.

The source that grant the advantage would say when/if it does grant advantage in a particular situation. And if it does then it does. An if a source carry a rider then it would apply even if you have multiple sources at once (and if multiple sources have riders then all should apply).

If an ability is optional (you may, you can, etc), you have the option of not using it. If an ability is automatic, it happens automatically. Most abilities with limited uses or side effects are optional.
Thanks both. So if Innate Sorcery is active, can a wild magic sorcerer apply Tides of Chaos to gain advantage on a sorcerer spell (and thus trigger a wild magic surge when casting his/her next leveled sorcerer spell)?
