I have a Wild Magic sorcerer with the acolyte background. Getting the Magic Initiate feat, why is it that choosing the level 1 speel Cure Wounds do I get one free use of it, but I can't use spell slots after that for the skill.
In comparison the Drow Elven Lineage provides Faerie Fire for a Free Use and then you can use it through Spell slots. Is this an oversight?
Editlooking through the description it looks like it should work as a spell slot even though I don't have access to the spell normally...

Description
Two Cantrips. You learn two cantrips of your choice from the Cleric spell list. Int., Wis., or Cha. is your spellcasting ability for this feat's spells. Level 1 Spell. Choose a level 1 spell from the Cleric spell list. You always have that spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have. Spell Change. Whenever you gain a new level, you can replace one of the spells you chose for this feat with a different spell of the same level from the chosen spell list.
You can use your spell slots for the casting. I don’t think the character sheet will automatically take this into account. When you click “cast” it greys out so you know you used the free use. But you can manually check off a spell slot box and roll manually
Unless somehow you are using the 2014 version which didn’t allow you to use spell slots
My question about the 1st level spell is about the free cast once per long rest. In 5e the RAW say the free cast must be of the lowest spell slot (1st obviously), but then can be cast at cost from any spell slot.
So the question….in 2024 RAW can I cast one free spell with any spell slot?
Also for OP the description says, “You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have.” So yes you can cast it more than once.

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is no.
The free casting is without a spell slot. Using a higher level slot actually means you must use a higher level slot.
