Does the 1st level spell you learn and cast via this feat require a spell slot? I'm thinking no, since there's no spellcasting ability as a prerequisite.
Casting using the feat requires no slot, it is just limited to once per day cast at 1st level. However, if the class you choose for the feat matches a class you belong to then you can also cast the spell just as you can cast any other spell you have learned using a slot (of any level). A bard taking magic initiate (bard) would know an extra level one bard spell which they can cast once a day for free but also as many times as they like using their slots. A wizard with magic initiate (wizard) would know the extra spell, but would have to prepare it before they can use slots to cast it. Druids and clerics already know all the spells on their list, so the feat matching their class wouldn't teach them a new spell (though it would still let them cast it for free once a day). The feat is a way for warlocks to add to their very short spell list.

No, but you are only able to cast it once per day using the trait provided by Magic Initiate.
Indeed. Seems like a nice reasonable way to cast mage armor every day at no cost :D
