A Paladin makes a good combatant and does not have to be holy or lawful in 5e.
It might be interesting for this Holy Warrior to receive Divine Abjurations instead of the Arcane ones and follow Eldritch Knight in accessing Arcane Evocations and utility spells, possibly having a unique cantrip list such as:
Acid Splash, Chill Touch, Fire Bolt, Light, Mending, Poison Spray, Ray of Frost, Shocking Grasp, Resistance, Spare the Dying, Thaumaturgy, True Strike

Your character is an Eldritch Knight, who was a former cleric. You could take the Acolyte background either as is or simply swap out the feature 'Shelter of the Faithful' for one from another background, such as Hermit's 'Discovery' (possibly why you are no longer a cleric) or Noble's 'Position of Privilege' (You were second born to a noble family, when you were a child you were fostered, then sent to a seminary to join a temple- yet you always acted noble). Outlander's 'Wanderer' (You were always close to nature) or even Soldier 'Military Rank' (for you were in a martial seminary filled with Acolytes and Soldiers, some of your former friends may have been Cleric Soldiers, others possibly Acolyte Fighters).
The player wanted to be a former cleric. But no actual lvles of cleric. Thus the idea of Eldritch/Cleric Knight.
It sounds like a Paladin, but if they want to play a fighter this is a great way to link it to his past. Would he get his power from a deity like a cleric too?
He wanted to be kinda like a hellboy character. Using little bits from arcane and divine magic, but mostly brute combat. I ended up letting him take cleric spells as well. So far it has been going well with no issues.
Yeah, I don't see any problems with this. The only thing I'd worry about Arcane Charge at level 15 (and MAYBE Mass Healing Word).
The cleric is the only class with the mass healing spells (aside from a Bard that takes them as Magical Secrets), so I don't know how much you're going to want to include that in the Divine Knight. I mean, he won't get 3rd level spells until 13th level, so I don't think that will be too game breaking.
As for the Arcane Charge ability: the idea of a short teleportation is mostly arcane. I think of the Blink spell from Warcraft (and then later in World of Warcraft) and that was used by arcane spellcasters. In fact, I don't think Clerics get any teleportation spells (outside of possible domain spells). A possible replacement for that would be a self-only Bless spell that doesn't use a spell slot, or possibly a smite (either one of the smite spells from the Paladin spell list or an ability similar to a cleric's Divine Strike that lasts x number of rounds and requires concentration). And like usual, it will occur after using Action Surge (and could be used before all of the attacks that round, possibly benefiting each attack).
“It is a better world. A place where we are responsible for our actions, where we can be kind to one another because we want to and because it is the right thing to do instead of being frightened into behaving by the threat of divine punishment.” ― Oramis, Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
I think Paladin's are different enough to be their own thing with the Auras, Oaths and Divine Smites
A Fighter subclass that uses Cleric stuff could serve as the opposite of a War Cleric and Fighters do have some cool stuff next-to-no one has such as additional ASI's as well as additional Extra Attacks.
More spellcaster options for Fighter subclasses could help to cement the idea of Fighters being surprisingly versatile, in my opinion.
Here's what I'm wondering... are you allowing them to pull from both the Wizard and Cleric spell lists, or are they limited instead to just the Cleric spell list?
How broken would this be? I would use the same spells per day. Just access to the cleric spells instead of wizard.
Cleric Evocation level 1 spells (Fighter 3)
Cure Wounds, Guiding Bolt, Healing Word,
Cleric Abjuration level 1 spells (Fighter 3)
Protection from Evil and Good, Sanctuary, Shield of Faith
So your Holy Knight has 2 cantrips and 3 spells (2 of which must be Evocation or Abjuration).
The Pacifist or Battlefield Medic (Spare the Dying, Thaumaturgy cantrips, Cure Wounds, Sanctuary and Bless)
The Activist (Guidance, Sacred Flame cantrips, Guiding Bolt, Shield of Faith and Bane)
Wouldn't that just be called a paladin?

Again, playtest it and most importantly have fun
