If I have a monk with the tavern brawler feat so he is proficient with improvised weapons, can i now use them as monk weapons getting my martial arts die for damage?
My vision of creative combat using anything around me with that level of effectiveness just makes warm fuzzies taking me back to my childhood saturday afternoons watching black belt theatre. LOL
The 2024 definition of "Monk weapons" includes all simple melee weapons, as well as martial melee weapons that have the Light property. (It doesn't actually have anything to do with which weapons you're proficient with.)
Improvised Weapons don't generally count as either simple or martial weapons, so under the Rules As Written they don't count as Monk weapons.
That said, the rules on Improvised Weapons do say that they can be treated as simple or martial weapons if they resemble an actual simple or martial weapon closely enough. So a DM might rule that you can use certain improvised weapons as monk weapons under that principle, though in that case Tavern Brawler doesn't add any benefit.
Was looking at this character concept the other day. Thought it would be great fun to go full Jackie Chan and beat people with brooms ,ropes, ladders or whatever was laying around. I’m gonna talk to my dm and see what he thinks. Really I feel like if I can punch people or stab them with a dagger for my martial arts damage, then I should be able to hit them with anything that hard.

Just leaving here an opinion from Mike Mearls I found a while ago about the same question (link to sageadvice.eu):
@orihalori hi mike, a monk with tavern brawler feat. Can improvised weapons become monk weapons jackie chan style? @mikemearls not by rules as written, but it works fine if you allow it

Regarding 2024 rules, RAW no, as you only get the benefits of Monk weapons with simple weapons and light martial weapons.
Might be something, you should clarify with your DM, I would definitely allow it at my table.

Hehe yeah I had pretty much realized it wouldn’t work RAW. Thanks for sharing the quote though maybe my dm will agree.
No problem mate! It'd be fun ;)
