My party contends that if a monster has a resistance to say “slashing”, if they attack with a magical sword, it still deals full damage because it’s “magical slashing” and is not resisted. The PHB is unclear because it doesn’t specify if magical or non magical damage is assumed so I interpret that as all damage of that type, magical or non-magical, is resisted. Which is correct?
Magic is no longer a factor when it comes to resisting damage. If a creature is resistant to Bludgeoning damage Magic does not by pass that resistance for example.
The rules are as follows:
Some creatures and objects have Resistance or Vulnerability to certain damage types. If you have Resistance to a damage type, damage of that type is halved against you (round down). If you have Vulnerability to a damage type, damage of that type is doubled against you. For example, if you have Resistance to Cold damage, such damage is halved against you, and if you have Vulnerability to Fire damage, such damage is doubled against you.
The skills that use to make such distinction were also amended. For example, the Monk's Empowered Strikes now deal Force damage, instead of "magical bludgeoning". Silvered weapons are no longer necessary to damage werewolves, etc. Which is a good thing imo. The whole thing was confusing.

Yeah, Force damage is much more frequent. For example, the one you mentioned, or in the updated Primal Order, spells like Hunter's Mark, Shillelagh, and others.

It doesn't matter. Slashing is slashing no matter the source.
In the 2014 rules it specified non-magical slashing, and if the monster just had slashing it was resistant to all slashing regardless of source.
