Real people have survived falls from aircraft without parachutes or anything for several thousand to tens of thousands of feet in the air. And it should take about 1500 ft to hit terminal velocity, so no matter the height, survival is possible.
Admittedly, falling from that height irl incapacitates you even if you survive, and you'll die without swift medical attention. But, a high level barbarian with a superhuman level of resilience should be able to survive anything a normal person can barely survive 90% of the time. With falls, this is especially the case if they throw their weapons out to the side so as to get them out of the way, and they aren't being weighed down by armor or something, which in the case of a barbarian probably isn't a problem.
I do realize this is a Necro, but since your comment was a hell of a Necro I figure it doesn't matter all that much.
You might as well just remove any falling damage at all if your expecting your character to live just because.
Removing the threat of death from a character and they act like they can not die. Which removes a huge amount of role play and essentially fun from the game for the player.
And terminal velocity is reached in 6 seconds which is only 580 feet of falling.
In all fairness, regular human beings are able to fall from great distances if not terminal velocity and live to tell the tale. And even at level 1 character is already someone of incredible power, by level 6 they start becoming Olympic level athletes and by level 20 they’re essentially demigods if you’re a powerbuild probably on the level of a minor or even major god. All that is to say if a regular human can do it even a low level character should be able to

Our optional rule was less simple but worked.
The first 100 feet was 1d8. or any part there of. Not quite logical but what is in D&D?
The second 100 feet was an added 2d8. or any part of for a 3d8 total and so on.
The third 100 feet was an added 3d8 6d8 total
the fourth 100 feet was an added 4d8. 10d8 total
The fifth 100 feet was an added 5d8. 15d8 total.
The sixth 100 feet was an added 6d8 21d8 total. (terminal velocity reached in six seconds so 168 total possible damage)
After this it maxed out.

Falling damage maxes out at 70 avg. It's a lot for 1st and 2nd tier characters, but it isn't going to outright kill most characters beyond that point.
"Not all those who wander are lost"
Then raise the damage.
