A little bit of context to start: I'm playing a very paranoid, scheme-y rogue who has sworn off magical disguises, items, spells, etc. It's part of his character that he believes magic schemes are caught easier than mundane ones (a pesky detect magic would clock a Disguise Self, but not elaborate make-up). Now that he's met the wizard in our party, I have questions about the limitations and functions of Nystul's Magical Aura (we're using 2014 rules).
Do you think NMA would cloak an object with an active spell effect? For example, if Light was cast on a rock, the rock was set down, then NMA was cast on the rock, would the rock have a magical aura detectable by Detect Magic? This is a hypothetical.
Additionally, what about magic items that can be used to cast a spell? Like a ring of Mage Armour. My interpretation is that with NMA cast on this ring, the ring appears nonmagical, but if the spell is cast through it, the target of the spell still emits a magical aura.
Happy to hear other interpretations! I'm a forever dm finally able to play as a player, but the person running it is far less experienced and would truthfully let me do whatever. I'd rather come up with a fair judgement on it.
Edit: While technically not RAW, how do we feel about casting NMA's False Aura on a creature to cloak an active spell? Is there anything in Sage Advice or past editions that would imply that's possible, RAI?
I would believe you are correct, since I'm pretty sure that’s what the spell is intended for. If a magic item casted a spell, yea the spell would probably pick up in Detect Magic's radar.
