I used once for the Hiding rule before a combat. But just as a try, it was quite fun, but I would not use for each d20 roll....too many rolls is too much.
I use the proficiency die for all but one of my games I run. The players love it. I don't use it for monsters (just their default bonus based on HD) but I do use it with NPCs and monsters with character levels. I would think the variability at higher levels would dissuade them but it's the lure of the 6 or 8 on the d6/d8 at higher levels that adds more excitement to the rolls. If the players are getting more fun out of more dice, then I'm all for it. Besides, it makes the math skills after a few adult beverages a little more challenging and often hilarious.
I tried it for a bit, but it didn't quite work out with my group. We have one player who still struggles with the rules to this day, so adding an extra fiddly bit on top of it slowed down the game moreso than it was already slowed down. (Player never grasped the concept of "spell save DC" for more than a few minutes; every single time it came up another player had to walk them through how to calculate it and advise them to write it down. Which was then forgotten the next time it was called for, and the cycle would repeat again.)
I generally use it when I DM, and my players (and I) find it far more fun than the static bonus (Save DCs and Monster proficiency still uses the static bonus though), and my players actually remember it applies more than they remembered the static bonus.

We all leave footprints in the sands of time.
