From FR Heroes of Faerun, the wording for the Speak with Animals part of the Emerald Enclave Fledgling feat is NOT the same as in many other feats where you are given one free casting of a spell AND can use spell slots. While I can see the selection being unpopular for non-spellcasting classes, even if it did allow one use, the ritual aspect would still be unusable to them. Since membership in the Emerald Enclave is not limited to just spellcasters, this seems thematically out of character given the Emerald Enclave Caretaker background.
"Speak with Animals. You always have the Speak with Animals spell prepared and can cast it with any spell slots you have. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell (choose when you select this feat). When you cast this spell as a Ritual, its duration is 8 hours."
Other feats use the following (or similar) verbiage:
"You always have that spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have."
Someone without normal spellcasting or spell slots could still cast the spell as a ritual. In the 2024 rules, ritual casting is part of the general spellcasting rules and doesn't depend on having any particular class features. It only requires that the spell be prepared (which in this case it always is).
Adding to wagnarokkr, the language about spell slots is to make it clear that if you do have spell slots, you can also use those to cast the spell. When they first started giving spells with feats, it didn’t include that language, which led to confusion about if you could also use the spell slot.
