I find the 2024 version more balanced than any other versions of DnD. In fact i made very few house rules because theres fewer than ever optimisation abuse, Sure there's still OP and suboptimal builds, but all classes and most subclass can actually do good with good feats choices.
So my team of 4 players came with a Spartan thematic. They all started human lvl 1 fighter dip with the protection feat and shield
At lvl 2 :
There s a Shilalegh Paly. That still do great damage
A wizard
A Cleric
A Barbarian
They still do really good damage, cover most skills with custom backround, and this feat is so OP they can go many encounters without being hit a single time. They usually split in duos in case of aoe. Sure as a dm i can give them CR boost encounters, more casters enemies but i have to boost encounters so much that it s always TPK risk or a breeze.
It s almost the best team build i ever had in DND. Still fun, feels like 300 movie, my players love it, so i do ;)
It's a decent setup. If you want to throw them through the ringer, toss a monster at them that has some saving throw-based damage abilities, like a dragon with a breath ability. A Gold Dragon Wyrmling would be appropriate for this level.
