So I was watching a couple folks play I know...and I was wondering, can familiars use spellgems RAW in 2014 5e? regular old wizard familiars. I know to an extent they can probably use rings of spell storings, but the bit in spell gems about knowing the spell or having it on your spell list caught me sideways when I read it.
...secondary question for similar reasons, can you nystuls magic aura and planar bind undead?
First Question: Idk how they would be able to use items at all - the familiar isn't the one casting spells, you are. If you mean, can YOU use a Spellgem/Ring of Spell Storing to cast a spell through your familiar, I'd argue yes. The spell's wording is: "When you cast a spell with a range of touch, your familiar can deliver the touch. Your familiar must be within 100 feet of you, and it must take a Reaction to deliver the touch when you cast the spell." It doesn't specify that you need to expend a spell slot to cast the spell this way, and it's still considered "casting a spell" whether it's using a spell slot, using an item to cast the spell, or using a spell scroll.
Second Question: I'd say yes. You can cast Nystul's Magic Aura to change an Undead's creature type to Celestial, Elemental, Fey, or Fiend, which lasts for 24 hours, giving it: "Mask (Creature). Choose a creature type other than the target’s actual type. Spells and other magical effects treat the target as if it were a creature of the chosen type." You could then take an hour to cast Planar Binding. The only problem I'd foresee is if the creature were hostile, you'd need to keep it subdued for that hour to actually Bind it.

While familiars can probably use some items in general, none of the options for familiars know any spells or have a class spell list, so they can't use a Spell Gem. A few of the special ones available to Warlocks with Pact of the Chain do know how to cast Invisibility, so they could use a Spell Gem containing that spell specifically — but since they can already cast that spell innately without expending any resources, there would be no reason for them to do so.

Yes. That sort of thing is the main purpose of casting Nystul's Magic Aura on a creature.
