Druid star and aid

My friends say that the Druid's Circle of Stars bonus (chalice) can heal an ally by 1d8 if they cast the Aid spell, but I don't think so, because the spell was intended to simply increase the maximum number of hits, but they argue that it also increases the current number of hits and call it "regain." Please help us resolve this dispute.

• Chalice is said to work on spells that restore hit points
• The actual wording of aid is "Maximum and current hit points increase"
• The wording of cure wounds healing word and power word heal is  it "a creature regains hit points"
• Aura of vitality, heal and healing spirit are said to restore hit points

It is up to the DM whether these words are synonyms or not. You could make a case that a druid can not use the chalice feature when casting cure wounds.  

When I played a stars druid I could use chalice with aid (the additional creature did not increase their maximum hit points but they did increase their current HP), if I was DM I would rule the same. 

As above - I ruled that my player's Circle of Stars druid could use the chalice with anything that healed one's actual HP, regardless of the wording of the spell. As long as it gave you actual HP and not just temp HP.. So, since Aid does increase your current HP amount, I ruled yes the chalice would work.

Well, one thing you should sort out first is that it definitely does increase both the maximum and current hit points; that's very clearly stated in the description of the spell. 

While I can see how the description can be read both ways, I don't see any really compelling reason not to allow the Chalice thing to work with Aid. It's not going to break or imbalance anything, and it's more fun if it works.
