I know Xanathar's has an optional rule that penalizes sleeping in armor. I haven't been able to find anything in 2024 that addresses the issue, which makes me wonder if it's been dropped. Thoughts?
If your character is over 30 they should take 1d6 bludgeoning damage from sleeping in armor and have disadvantage on Dexterity Saving Throws (from the stiffness) and on Stealth Checks (from the popping of my ...er, I mean THEIR... joints).

Realistically, sleeping in the wild (armor or no armor) isn't going to be comfortable, and armor might well make it better, not worse (that tree root can't stab you in the back through your plate armor).
Just my opinion... you cannot rest well in armor. You may only gain the benefits of a short rest during your long rest attempt. Or you may complete a long rest, but you only heal back half as many hit points as you had lost, and you start the day with one level of exhaustion.
Ultimately, it's up to the DM how to interpret and apply rules at the table, especially optional rules, and especially especially rules about things that they have prior first-hand real-world experience in.

It’s up to the DM. Largely depends on how much of a nuisance they want night attacks to be.

Fair.
