As the title states, I'm asking if the cut damage of the fire effect that passed through a wall of water gets halved again when hitting a target that has resistance to fire?
I understand that multiple effects of resistance don't stack (in 5e, nothing stacks?). But because of the wording of the effects, I feel that it does get halved twice. Effectively cutting down the fire effect to 25% of the original amount.
Example: Enemy Wizard casts fire bolt at a Ranger with fire resistance, for 20 damage. Passing through the "Wall of Water" spell, the damage is reduced to 10. Upon hitting the Ranger, due to his fire resistance, it is halved to 5 damage.
Am I mistaken to believe that this would be the outcome? And sorry if I posted in the wrong section, I thought this would be the right one... xP
P.S. - Also, just curious about the Wall of water spell in general. If I cast the wall in a 30 ft line originating from my character, can I freeze the whole wall if I cast a ray of frost through the entirety of the wall? As in my end to the other end, in a straight line since rays don't curve.
And finally, if I create a ring of water instead and the fire effect passed through the whole ring, does it reduce the effect twice??
Oh, multiple questions on a single thread are fine.
About the last question, I think the wall is always one, whatever the shape might be. So the fire damage is halved only once for one spell of wall of water.
Yes, the effects of wall of water and fire resistance do stack.
Yah, resistance doesn't stack, but multiple effects can apply "halving" to the damage (like, for example, fire resistance and a successful dexterity saving throw on a Fireball).
Oh shoot! I didn't even think about the saving throw!! So then if the Fireball rolled 24 and the fire resistant target behind the Wall of Water made a successful save, the damage would be mitigated down to 3!? I need to remember that some spells have a saving throw to them..
But now, would the fire effect be cut twice if it went through both walls of the Wall of Water Ring?

It wouldn't be halved twice, because the spell says the fire damage is halved if it passes through the wall. A scorching ray passes through the wall, it gets halved, period. If the spell had daid "fire damage gets halved every time it passes through the wall", that'd be something different. But, as is, basically, you ask: did the fire pass through the wall? If the answer is "yes", it gets halved. If "no", then not. :)

Thanks for the quick feedback! Wording is everything in D&D!!
Now, do I make another post for the last two questions or should I just wait? xD

Thanks for all the knowledge guys!! Gonna be useful either tonight or in a few days. ^^
