Wizards seem to have no creativity when it comes to the Cleric class. Every single subclass for clerics is the same. They get a few minor abilities, and some domain spells and that is it. Nothing that actually changes how the class is played. Domain subclasses are boring! Seriously....figure something else out please. Domains are low hanging fruit. How about create some real cleric subclasses that change how the class is played? How about stuff like Undead Hunter? God Touched? Martyr? Demagogue?
Those actually invoke images of a holy person with a specific mission or role as opposed to "I like plants" or "I like knowledge".
Stop being so lame when it comes to cleric subclasses please.
This is the Rules and Mechanics forum, where you ask questions about how the rules work. This is not a feedback forum (and no WotC employee is likely to ever see this).
But... have you read Twilight (backwards-compatibility ftw) or Trickster? Cleric has some great subclasses. If anything, Cleric's biggest problem is how limited their Channel Divinity is.
And unsurprisingly, spells are an important part of a spellcaster. Getting access to particular spells that aren't usually on the Cleric list can completely transform how the Cleric plays. If anything, spellcaster subclasses probably do too much.
The only difference between Clerics historically was which spells they had access to. (Back in 2nd AD+D days, you only had access to your domain spells, which was a larger list than present, and you had two domains iirc. And your deity had a suite of maybe 4 domains for you to choose those two from. This might have been optional rules... I can't remember at this point).
Clerics are a very powerful class. They're full casters with a pretty decent ability that can be used quite often, PLUS they have good armor proficiencies and decent combat ability. Weaker subclasses are an unfortunate necessity for balance.
Rather than trying to make Domains radically different, it sounds like what you want are more Orders (God Touched, Martyr, Demagogue). Personally I would like more of those types of choices for all the classes.
End of the day, however, a lot of the flexibility that you want comes from the ability to multiclass and the feat options that you choose. A Demagouge? Sounds like a cleric with a dip into Bard. Maybe throw in Musician but reflavor it so that the character is giving a rousing speech to give people Heroic Inspiration.
Undead Hunter? Really more of a Paladin, IMO, but if that doesn't work then a cleric with a dip into either Fighter or Ranger.
God Touched? Cleric with a dip into Sorcerer or Warlock which can be useful for allowing their clerical spells to be modified or else granting Pact Boons.
