There is no specific limit for this in the rules, so the limit is however many you can fit on your fingers. It would probably be reasonable to rule that you can't wear more than one per finger, but that's not actually stated anywhere.
There's no more 'item slot' rules like previous editions. Put rings on all your fingers, all your toes, in your ears. Two rings per finger? Why not, married women wear two on their ring finger all the time.
The only limit on magic items in 5.5 is attunement slots. For items that don't require attunement, stack em up. Wear layers. 3 cloaks? Amateur. 5 pairs of gloves!
I kid a little (I think you run out of no attunement magical rings at some point here, anyway...), but there's no reason to limit characters in the rules. I might draw the line at wearing more than one pair of boots, unless it was a particularly silly campaign...
(Stacking armor doesn't do much for you, because you choose one armor calculation. But if you did have a padded armor and a chain hauberk you wanted to wear together for other effects, that would actually be perfectly historical).

The 5.5e rules do actually specify that you can't benefit from more than one of certain types of things: footwear, gloves, bracers, armor, headwear, and cloaks. Rings aren't on the list, though.

I thought the attunement rules did away with all that.
I did track down the 'one armor and one shield' rule, but it's not in magic items, it's in normal equipment. (And I disagree as a matter of practical reality. You can easily don a shield on each arm if you really wanted to, and wearing a gambeson under a chain hauberk is normal. But sure, I'll grant that's a rule.)
However, I can't find anything limiting the number of boots, cloaks, etc... I've only got the SRD on-hand at the moment - any idea where the rule is located? It doesn't appear to be in magical items (SRD p204).
Edit: I did find it, there's apparently two magic item sections in the SRD (p102-3), because that isn't confusing. It's a pretty ad hoc collection of things you can't wear more than one of, with no rhyme nor reason for most of them. You can wear multiple belts, multiple neclaces/pendants, and multiple pairs of glasses apparently. But two cloaks is a bridge too far?
In 5.5. If a PC has a pocketful of magic rings that do not need to be attuned, how many can they wear at once?
If you have three rings that need to be attuned, how many of those can you wear?
