I’ve been listening to some DND podcast and watching videos on YouTube, and the Thunderclap spell keeps getting used with no effect on fellow players.
Is there something I’m missing? I’ve been reluctant to use these types of spells because of the harm to other players. I don’t see anything in the spell text that excludes friendlys.
Thunderclap's range is only 5 feet. So it can only affect creatures who are right next to you. You're correct, it affects everyone who's next to you, both allies and opponents. But the range is super short and that's probably why it's not having any effect on the allies of the people who are using it.
When I used Thunderwave I was very careful about how close my allies were when I used it. If there was any doubt I used Misty Step instead. Better safe than sorry.
If you’re an evocation school wizard, at 2nd or 3rd level you can spell shape or something so that up to 3 friendlies automatically succeed their saving throw against your evocation spells, and if they’d have taken half damage, they take none. I’ve never played a wizard myself, so I’m not sure on the terminology, but I know it’s a legit thing.
Oops meant Thunderwave (15ft cube centered on self). This might explain my confusion while listening to other media
I always assumed that Thunderwave was "centered" as well, but its been pointed out to me that it isn't necessarily centered so long as it's "originating from you" (so you can blast it away from you in one direction while leaving other adjacent spaces unaffected). That still doesn't feel right to me tbh based on how its described.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
I just read how the area of affect of a Cube works and I’ve been doing it wrong. It works completely differently from how I’ve been using it. Thanks!

Well, I’m playing a Druid so I don’t think had spell shape
