You can get AC easily in the 30-50s in other editions including Pathfinder. I think 22 AC isn’t crazy in relation but within the current 5e it’s pretty hard to beat.
In 4th it was common to have 35AC when you where in the lvl 20+, but the BAB was also scalling very highly, my Hexblade had +38 to hit and you where going Vs stuff that had 48 AC...
even though i liked 4th Ed, it was one of the most ridiculous things ever.
After doing some experimenting, it seems that even if you set a suit of magic medium armor to provide full Dexterity bonus, that doesn't override the maximum +2 from Dexterity. That looks like a bona fide bug.
Thank you! This cleared up some confusion. Yeah I really loved the old barkskin! It was "the" 2nd level spell that you would almost always prepare. One of the best spells in the game too. And now it just.. kinda sucks tbh. Yeah, most druids have a 14 AC and for 1 hour can get and extra 2. But it's a conc spell. Meaning that spells like call lightning or hold person cannot be used without dropping the barkskin. But this really help clear up some confusion for me! Thank you so much! ^^
Yeah. Once I played a system where it was like +28 or +41 to hit. And the damage was like 24d12. But you had like 230 hp. This should just have been lower because it's way way WAY to meaningless. Rolling that many dice, you would die in 2-4 shots. It was not the best system xD.
Bonuses to AC are allowed to stack. Calculations (usually worded "Your ac is..." or similarly) do not. You could have +7 above your paladin's base armor from shield and shield.
Also, be careful about the rules on digging up old threads.
Playing a Paladin/Sorcerer, would a Shield spell cast as a reaction stack with already equipped physical shield?
The answer to this question was posted on page 1. Yes, the Shield spell stacks. It is a bonus, not an AC calculation.

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
OK, so I'm reading through all this but I'm still confused so I'll ask my question if that's OK.
If I'm a dragonborn with natural armor can I combine this with chain-mail or do I have to pick from those two?
More or less pick one. Assuming you have the dragon hide feat, your AC is 13+dex while wearing no armor. If you put on chainmail, Your AC is now 16, with no dex modifier. In either case, you can use a shield and that would add another 2 to the AC.
If you are referring to the Dragon Hide feat, it stipulates that it only applies when you are not wearing armor.
If you are referring to Draconic Resillience (Draconic Blodline Sorc) it also stipulates that it only applies if you are not wearing armor.
Not sure what you're looking at, maybe post a link, or quote the passage you are having trouble with.

Basically, there are things that "calcuate" your AC, such as wearing armor, the Mage Armor spell, the Unarmored Defense feature of Monks & Barbarians, etc. And then there are things that add a "bonus" to your armor class, expressed as a +1/+2/etc. You can only use one of the "calculate" options available to you, as long as you meet all of its prerequisites. Then you can add "bonus" items to that, again assuming you meet all the requirements of that specific spell/feature/magic item/etc.
In your specific case, whether you're talking about the natural armor from the Dragon Hide feat or the Draconic Resilience feature of Draconic Sorcerers, they "calculate" your AC, and so does a set of chain mail armor. In addition, both Dragon Hide and Draconic Resilience specify that they only work "when you aren't wearing armor".
I think I am getting the hang of this for most...but still struggling with Monks unarmed defense with a barrier tattoo.
From what I understand, you have to choose one or the other based on the fact each sets an armor class value + modifiers...as they have a fixed start, and not just a buff, they count as the same-ish category.
But if you had unarmed defense or barrier tattoo, it could be added to with things like a shield spell or ring, etc that give a + to AC
Unarmed Defense and Barrier Tattoo both prescribe an AC calculation, one would have to be chosen over the other as these don't stack.
An ability, item or spell effect that add a bonus to AC, but not a different calculation, will stack.

Those should be the Elven chain, the character sheet I happen to currently have the ring and chain not equipped as I was tinkering

Don't know if it's just me, but it doesn't look like the items are equipped. You need to tick the "active" boxes in the equipment section.
If you click the "Armor Class" section, it will tell you the maths it went into to get that number. This may help.
they are not currently equipped. I was tinkering with a few things.
