During a recent game, we came into a bit of a dilemma. We came up against a couple of humans who were being controlled by an Intellect Devourer. We had a mystic in the party that was fighting them. The mystic used an effect that does psychic damage. The question is this: Does the psychic damage go directly to the I.D., or not? There appears to be a bit of a RAW conflict.
The Body Thief ability states: If it wins the contest, the intellect devourer magically consumes the target's brain, teleports into the target's skull, and takes control of the target's body. While inside a creature, the intellect devourer has total cover against attacks and other effects originating outside its host.
However, Psychic damage says: mental abilities deal psychic damage (implying that psychic damage affects the brain),
I think that the damage would affect the I.D., but the RAW seem a bit conflicting. Any help would be appreciated.
This can be up to the DM a little, but RAW, the psychic damage would be done to the host, not the intellect devourer. If it helps, you can think of it as damage to the ID's connection, or to the host's remaining nervous system.
