So I'm currently making a new character for a secondary campagin. It's not a major character and she might never come up. It's just a backup plan because it's my dad and my little brothers game with one of my dad's friends and his kid. And they may end up a few times playing in a weekend where I'm there so I've begun making a character just in case. Ended up making a character that I really like tbh. And kinda a shame that she might never come up. A few things that's good to know first: First: We're using the shitty ass bull****ed useless pile of rotting waste of filth system where you have to buy points. With a max of 15 + racial. Sorry for the quick rant.. but man it's been a while since I've hated a system that much. Roll 4d6 and take the lowest, okay it works. All scores start at 13 and you assign each point. Better in some cases. But that system is probably one of the worst character creation systems I've ever tried. Not that it doesn't work! But man! When I look at my character sheet it's like looking at a goblin or kobold stat block. I feel naked and useless. Anyway! Sorry! Yeah. We're using the system that ****s you like a -
Second: I'm a rogue 1, and dual classed to sorcerer (Divine Soul). Next level is probably going into sorcerer. Else mainly rogue. Mostly I think I'm going for rogue. She is a human. She has 16 in both dex and cha. She is a variant human so I get a feat at level one. Now onto the question (kinda. Sorry):
At first I thought magic initiate. Get 2 extra cantrips from wizard (minor illusion and mage hand) and then get the find familiar spell. Whoo! But if I'm going to be focusing on rogue I thought that X-bow Expert might be better. She has a Hand X-bow as her main battle weapon. I have a shortsword that I reskinned as a baton so she can fold it out and bash people. (Because a quarterstaff is strength not dex based. So I had to make it a shortsword) And because she is chaotic neutral and is quite the dick she has a sling. That looks like a trip caster from HZD because I like the idea of shooting one of those instead of having a sack with strings. But then I thought about Crossbow Expert. Because I'm gonna have to buff my dex (or cha) at 4th level. I know it's shit to buff the stats instead of feats but I can't have a 16 dex until 8th level. Again, no. no no no. Don't talking about the systemmmmmm.
So. Crossbow Expert or Magic Initiate? I'm mostly aiming for 3rd level spells with sorcerer. For stuff like haste. (And maybe a little bit blink).
Sorry for the long and useless part. I talk a lot. Even through text. Oh and I hate that system. (Sorry again). Thanks in advance though! ^^
As a Rogue you wont have many opportunities to use the benefits of crossbow expert, you shouldn’t be in melee range of anyone (and if you are you have your shortsword), your bonus action is being used to hide/ disengage , and your sling doesn’t require reloading.
once you get 3 Rogue levels you can go arcane trickster and get a familiar and wizard cantrips along with some spellcasting without forgoing an ability score improvement. So I’m not sure that I’d recommend magic initiate for that purpose.
If I were you I’d look into Sharpshooter, the extra damage is crazy and you can offset the accuracy penalty using the advantage you get from attacking while hidden
Skulker is also great, it allows you to hide while lightly obscured. This includes being in dim light, light fog, clouds of insects, behind just a little cover, in a bush, or in Darkness (even against races with Darkvision as they see darkness as dim light, which is lightly obscured) hiding in the middle of a dim room is a lot of fun, and it also negates the -5 passive perception penalty that everyone suffers by being in Dim light. The bit that makes it so that if you miss an attack you don’t give away your cover is pretty rad too.
a note on the rant, the point buy system balances the game, you can have up to a +3 at 1st level or a +4 by level 4. If you roll for stats and get amazing stats it negates the penalty of taking feats and makes the game a lot less fun for those in the party who rolled low. Every PC being built on the same number of points is really the best way to go. You’ll find that this is the way that most other RPG’s do it as well.

Sharpshooter actually has been proven to lower dpr against average ac enemies, for rogue, because it reduces the likelihood that sneak attack triggers, even with advantage

My current Monday game has me with an 18 str centaur barbarian, with polearm master at level 5, while there is a rogue with 12 dex

I don't use the roll system. After I discovered the 13 in all 6 stats + racial I've only rolled once because the other character in that campaign had really good stats. So I wanted to be on the same level. Else I don't intent to roll stats ever again. I also have a document with a set of good scores. I think they are: 18 +4 16 +3 14 +2 12 +1 10 - 8 -1 I use that for a quick built if I want or for new players. You can move them around as you want so you'll not end up a sorcerer with 8 charisma xD. I've never played with the point buy system. And I hate it more because of the campaign my character is going to be in. This is not for a full time campaign, so I won't level up as quickly. I'm not even sure I'm going to be the same level as the players. At the moment they are level 2. But if they ever get to 7 I think I might be a 5 or 6. Depends on what my DM rules. I feel really weak. Now I will admit, I have a problem with needing high stats. But I thought of a few character builds but they wouldn't work because of the lack of bonuses in the right skills. Which forced me to pick another race and I never want to be forced to a race because of game rules. Creating my second character for my full time campaign took a month. Yep. Think about how many character concepts and ideas I came up with there. They could work because of the system used in that campaign but in this other campaign where I'm a guest, I have to play a gnome or high elf if I want to play a wizard. A wizard with a 12 save I just, it's just low for how I like it. But, I'm sure the system is fine I just don't like it for how I play. But I agree, I don't like the roll system that much. My highest stat on my first character was 16. While my little brother had 18 in both str and con.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble. I've fortunately created the character as we are (hopefully) playing next weekend. Ended up going with a different character and using this one as a backup I think. I wanna try some more reckless play. So there is a good chance I will have to return to this character at some point xD. Anyway, I talk.
Thank you for the help! ^^ Best the loot & luck to you all! ^^

So uh, point buy is actually what the game was balanced around
The dice are more likely to screw you :P
You can be level 1 with a 17 in a stat with point buy
It's fine

It's just not fun to use rolls
Imagine playing in a game where one player had 6 18s and everyone else had 6-10
Everyone would just feel useless besides the one superhero
