I'm DMing a group through Dungeon of the Mad Mage, still lvl 5 and almost done with 1st floor. Some of the Elder Runes have some serious effects, so I am looking for advice on how often to have those reset. Also, is it acceptable to choose a rune effect for comedic effect or story, or is that going too far? Also wanted to add a story about my party's first encounter with a rune. They are walking down the corridor on floor 1 with the statues and giant spider corpses, and just as they are about to go through the doors to area 15, and the dragonborn sorcerer decides to sneak. He rolls a nat 1, so he steps up to the doors, says "I'm going to sneak in here!" out loud to everyone, and immediately get hit by the rune, 60ft. away. He fails his save and falls over, completely restrained. The kobold bard (not the brightest) assumes that this is part of the plan and imitates him. When the kobold realizes he's actually magically restrained, he tried to move him somewhere safer by dragging him, and gets a nat 1 on the strength check (he's small, even for a kobold). This gets his legs pinned under the dragonborn, so he tries to shove him off, rolling another nat 1, and getting further pinned. He finally manages to roll the dragonborn off of him, but the dragonborn is now stiff as a board, face down on the ground. A further nat 1 strength, and the kobold stumbles on top of him, shoving the dragonborn's nose into the stone floor. Eventually they decide that they need to retreat to the surface and let him recover, and do so.
Anyway, it's moments like this that I want to have with the runes bane effects, funny but still possibly dire… Advice?

I've been resetting them after a long rest.
