So, I have a player that really wants to get a wolf mount which is legitimately a thing for the Selesnya but I'm not seeing anything about prices for such a creature and the character is a Fighter. Does anyone have any ideas on how to price them or where I could find such a source? ^^; I even checked the Ledev section of the book, but it said "The humanoids among them ride dire wolves, which they raise from pups to forge close bonds between rider and mount," does that mean that ONLY the Selesnya have them?
Right now I'm sort of figuring 200 gp for one? Reason being that it's not as fast or as strong as a Warhorse and, when you compare a Mastiff to the Draft Horse, the difference in price is about half but they're more exotic and there's a scroll that lets you get one that's at the lowest 1000 gp? I'm really not confident in my pricing. ^^;
They call them 'dire' because they're forced to carry riders when they are totally not biomechanically adapted for the work. That's why they're so vicious.
It says it there in the text "The humanoids among them ride dire wolves, which they raise from pups to forge close bonds between rider and mount,"
So if your PC wants a dire wolf mount, he had to raise it them self. It probably has no cost to acquire a pup, as long as it's a selesnya background, but would need to spend money to pay for its food and need enough downtime to raise the pup.
If you start at level 1 you could give your player a wolf pup for free, that he has to feed and train for some time before he can use it as a mount.
If you start at a higher level you could give him the mount for a value equal to the cost of the food x weeks it needs to be raised
And the PC should have animal handling as a proficiency to make sense i guess
I wouldn't worry about the numbers too hard for balance. If the character is starting out at lvl 1 they obviously don't have 200gp for the animal, I like the idea of it being the Background Feature... as well as the Background Feature makes it easy to bond with a new wolf if it dies.
While a Warhorse is CR:1/2 and a Direwolf is CR:1.
Remember that the Dire Wolf can't attack unless the Fighter is giving up attacks... or the Direwolf has its own init and the character isn't controlling the mount.
Obviously things like "raised from a pup" isn't super reasonable in D&D when, rocks fall and mount die. Sidenote, I would treat the mounts as characters and give them death saves... otherwise 1 fireball and the mount is dead.

Thank you for your time.
Feel free to check out my home brew, the Laika - a race of humanoid canines. (Current Version: 3)
The short answer is "yes, only the Selesnya have dire wolf mounts." In that case it is more of a story thing than a money issue.
They call them 'dire' because they're forced to carry riders when they are totally not biomechanically adapted for the work. That's why they're so vicious.
Looking for new subclasses, spells, magic items, feats, and races? Opinions welcome :)
