We are playing Dragon Heist, and have just acquired Trollskull Manor and Tavern.
I have an Artificer 1 / Wizard 1 character. He is proficient in Investigation and Carpenter's Tools (and owns a set).
Problem:
Given the run down state of the place, my character would like to make sure the estate is structurally sound. Is the appropriate method for skill/proficiency checks here just a straight up D20 + Intelligence Bonus + Proficiency? I assume you would not apply 2 proficiency bonuses one for both the tools and one for the skill. Or perhaps the character should get advantage on the roll?
As a DM I appreciate when my players make a compelling argument for why they'd be good at something! But it's up to the DM what kind of check can be made and what bonuses will apply.
That being said I think you have a good case for why this character would good at this check with bonuses/advantage. You are correct that you probably wouldn't apply your proficiency bonus twice, but I think a reasonable thing to ask for is an Investigation check at advantage if the character is focusing on the wooden parts of the structure because of their Carpenter's Tools.

Oh and please no spoilers on the adventure :)
In the event skill and tool proficiencies overlap, XGtE suggests giving advantage.

Thanks to both of you. I will nicely discuss with my DM then :)
