I have a couple of different questions regarding concentration spells and how they function.
1. I cast the concentration spells Protection from Good and Evil on an ally who was willing at the time of casting. The duration of the spell was still in effect when the party member declares he was no longer willing and that the spell effect should end. Can the target of a concentration spell change their mind about being willing midway through the duration?
2. I cast the concentration spell Shield of Faith on an ally whom then still proceeded to be killed while outside of my view. Would the target of my spell being knocked unconscious or being killed end my spell effect? And, would I be aware of the spell ending if that were the case?
In these cases concentration is actually irrelevant. These are questions of spell duration and ending conditions:
1. I don't think the recipient can cancel the spell after the fact. Their willingness is part of the targeting and casting, but not the ongoing operation of this spell.
2. Nope, spell continues. Many spells specify that they end when the target hits 0hp or similar, this spell doesn't. You now have a corpse with +2 AC.
Both spells last 10 minutes or until the caster loses concentration by whatever method.
Concentration spells will last for their maximum duration or until you end concentration, whichever comes first.
1. The subject of the spell needs to be willing when the spell is cast. There is nothing in the rules that says the spell ends if the subject is no longer willing. My thinking is that the spell would continue as long as you concentrate on it.
2. The spell would continue as normal.
