So my DM and I are unsure if a Find Greater Steed mount can also be used as a solo combatant. The confusion comes from the text from "Find Steed" that says the creature you summon can only be a mount, but "Find Greater Steed" doesn't say that the summoned mount can only be used as a mount. I'm pretty sure it's up to the DM on if the wording should be carried over or not.
What are your thoughts?
(The lore behind this thread is a Dragonborn Paladin can summon dragons as mounts, such as a modified ambush drake or a wyvern, and I am wondering if I can use my Wyvern in combat. I don't think it would be too much because I couldn't get it until level 15 anyway and a Wyvern is CR 6, any party member could solo a wyvern.)
It does not say 'only' and it is understood by the majority that you can fight with the mounts from both find steed and find greater steed... which is to say the mounts you summon can attack, take the attack action, make attacks, and in any and every way attack. Both as solo creatures and/or with you.
It is also possible that a DM might read more into the way certain rules are worded so it is always worth checking with them, but as I say, the vast majority don't even question whether or not your mount can be a combatant in solo combat. They often make an attack themselves and an attack with the mount, or, if separated from their mounts, make their own attacks and then make a solo attack for their mount.
Yeah, nothing says they can't attack, so they can attack. Simple as that. Find steed and find greater steed are the same in that regard. Find greater steed is just newer and has clearer wording.
However, the rules for "Mounted Combat" say a mount can only take the Dash, Disengage, or Dodge action in the PHB, pg. 198 I believe. Does that only apply to a domesticated mount? Your find steeds are technically spirits, so maybe they could attack...? That's a DM interpretation probably. Mounted Combat in general is VERY lightly touched on, so a lot of this is really up for interpretation of what a DM thinks is fair.

A controlled mount can only take those actions. An independent mount takes normal turns while carrying you around. Intelligent mounts should be independent .
”An independent mount retains its place in the initiative order. Bearing a rider puts no restrictions on the actions the mount can take, and it moves and acts as it wishes. It might flee from combat, rush to attack and devour a badly injured foe, or otherwise act against your wishes.”
your telepathic connection with summoned steeds and their loyalty largely eliminates the risk of independent mounts being unhelpful.
