I know that title was clickbaity, but hear me out. I was thinking about mechanics monsters could utilize, and I realized, as far as I know, there are no monsters that utilize draining spell slots. It seems obvious to me. A monster that can drain away magical energy. What do you think, and how would you utilize this? Leave ideas below! Cheers!
I had a very large ongoing battle with hundreds of participants where the players used skills challenges to determine how they affected the larger ongoing battle. At the end of the challenge (which they passed) I told them the party had used four level 1 spell slots, three level 2 spell slots, and one level three spell slot. The party was free to distribute this burden among themselves as they see fit. Had they failed, I would have said that the party suffered 80 damage and had used five level 1 spell slots, four level 2 spell slots, and two level three spell slots. The party would have been free to distribute this burden among themselves as they saw fit. Additionally, the sorcerer would have used two sorcery points, The cleric would have used one channel divinity, the bard would have used one inspiration, and the blood hunter would have used one crimson rite. It's worth noting that after the skill challenge--success or failure--the party went straight into a traditional fight with the remaining forces and the leaders of the opposing army.
That's the closest I have done to what you are describing. The players really liked it in the end and thought it was a good way of putting a burden on them and yet still giving them the agency to decide how they would carry that burden.

I think the closest would be there are some monsters that are immune to spells below a certain level, so they essentially waste the spell slots
