So I'm relatively new to D&D and I'm making a ranger character for my friend's campaign (she is also pretty new). I couldn't find how to add an animal companion to my character's sheets. Now I don't know if this mechanic doesn't exist, or if only a certain type of Ranger can have one (my ranger is the hunter type), but it's a little frustrating and more than an little confusing. Can anybody help?
So firstly, if you want to add an animal companion you go to the "Extra" portion of your character sheet, click "Manage Extras", then "Add an Extra", and select "Beast Companion". Based on the situation and feature you'll have specific restrictions of animals you can have as a follower. For the Beast Companion Feature it's: a Medium or smaller, Beast type monster, with a CR of 1/4 or lower.
Secondly, this is a Feature of the Beast Master Archetype. Hunters don't get the Beast Companion Feature, so if you are genuinely a Hunter you'd only get one if your DM is giving you a follower outside of your character's actual level progression.
