Working on a new campaign for the fall. The basis is 13 ghosts of scooby doo.
The players find an artifact that contains demons bound into it, and through a mishap it releases the Demons and they spread through the world.
I would like help creating the rules for this artifact
Things I want it to do:
Demons will be bound/trapped into this artifact when they are defeated. Characters as low as 1st level must be able to bind them to the artifact.
the artifact lures the demons to it. Demons will attack the bearer of the artifact.
I would like the artifact grant some sort of boon for every demon contained. whether that boon is attained by numbers of demons or challenge rating levels.
Ultimately this artifact, once full will be used by evil NPC who wants to entreat an audience with Orcus in order to get the secrets of Lichdom.
optional:the artifact compels the bearer to do evil stuff, slowly changing their alignment over time.
new 5e DM but do have years of experience with 2e to 3.5e
Well, the simplest thing to do would simply say that, when one of the specific creatures released from the book is killed when the book is within 30 feet of them, then they're automatically absorbed into the book.
Sticking with relative simplicity... I'd say each time one of the demons is absorbed, it unlocks a spell that can be cast from the book once per day, even by non-spellcasters. Just find something thematically appropriate to each demon. Maybe have a limit to how many times it can be used per day... maybe the book itself is sentient (and evil) and if they use the book to cast more than 3 spells in a day the player needs to make a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by the book for 1 minute. So there's some risk-reward involved and it doesn't just end up resulting in the players getting 13 free spells they can cast whenever they feel like it.
