So I have a player in our group that wants to be an air Genasi, but have physical tabaxi traits. So it would be a white tiger air Genasi (hair always whisping as if air is moving it kinda deal). He is mostly doing it for flavor as he has agreed to take the basic Genasi traits so he would not receive a climb speed, claws to use as weapons or sprint actions/abilities a tabaxi would normally get as he wants his character to be AL official. But in the world of DnD is this doable? Genasi description is pretty liberal in terms of who your mortal parents could have been or whatever, but I haven't heard of this concept before.
second part is I play with him in a hombrew campaign and we are trying to figure out how to merge the the two mechanically without making it into s snowflake op character. So far we were thinking to allow Dex +2, Con or Cha +1, unending breath, levitate and a climb speed or claws but not both. Is this too much or is it balalnced?
Not sure about the rules in AL, but if you were just to reskin the air genasi to look like a white tiger; use all the stats/powers as is, it might be okay. Certainly ok for home campaign.
If you are talking about a homebrew race, that would be a no for AL. I would keep the stats at con+2 and Dex +1 personally. Levitate and Climb speed would be a mutually exclusive option, and claws unending breath the other one. It would be balanced enough for homebrew.
From your signature, it looks like you want to be an air genesi tabaxi.
Lol good eye! My sig is outdated and my tabaxi was a lion and that was a one shot. But nope! I am an Air Genasi Arcane Trickster Archer in a separate longer campaign which we are ending soon. (Not with this player). .
I am a Triton Devotion Paladin in the AL official one with the player I am referring to.
And in our homebrew campaign we are starting soon (also referenced above and also with this player) I am a Water Genasi Lycan Bloodhunter.
He cares more about flavor than mechanics which is why I suggested to him Genasi in general because they are a great unique flavor (though not SUPER optimal). Although I think it could be cool I personally wouldn't make this character because it just makes things messy but I want the guy to be happy because it will be a longer campaign according to he DM. Which is why I posed the question on if this makes sense and how to combine traits for the homebrew
Why does he want to be a genasi? What traits does he want?
He likes the aesthetics truly. I think he picked air simply for that reason but also the Dex bonus. He is looking to be a rouge or fighter class. So he is torn on tabaxi and air Genasi. (I told him just be white tiger tabaxi) than he came back with "wellllllll what if we combine them?! It would look so cool!" He got stoked and it's his only second/third campaign (his first one he hated because he picked a character out of group need not personal desire) so now he is swinging for the fences on making something he likes and we want to help him do that.
For homebrew anything is reasonable if the DM can balance it with the other characters. Definitely a power gaming concept but, that can be fun if everyone is on board.

As long as it is just a reskin, I don't see a problem with.
You have to be more careful about combining them, and it wouldnt be AL legal anymore which I believe is the point.
What class is he playing? A Tabaxi storm sorcerer seems like it would cover both "I'm a cat!" and "I'm touched by elemental air!"

He was thinking a rogue or fighter, but that's a great idea! I'll let pitch it to him!
