Armor of Agathys is only available for Warlocks and Oath of Conquest Paladins, which has a maximum level of 5. So that would be 25 temp HP and 25 damage to anyone that hits you within 1 hour.
What happens when you multi-class just say 17 sorcerer 3 warlock and cast Armor of Agathys as a 9th level spell with 5 points of Extended metamagic? would it mean 45 temp HP and 45 damage to anyone that hits you within 24 hours?
Probably not a good use of a 9th level spell, but it could be useful if you had ways of making yourself invulnerable or resistance from various melee attacks.
Yes, the casting of a spell at higher levels is limited only to what the section "At higher levels" of that spell says. If there is no limit to the level of spell slots, then it can be cast with a 9th level spell slot.
I don't think you can use the same metamagic option several times on a single cast, can you ?
Even if you can though, temporary hit points can't be healed, so the spell would only be effective as long as you took less than 45 damage, which should happen pretty quickly at lv20. It's still better than False Life, but as a sorcerer, you probably shouldn't receive melee damage anyway.

I ran a 17 abjuration wiz/1 warlock.
After a few turns in a wall of force dome, I had Stoneskin, fire shield, 9th level armor of agathys, mage armor and a boat load of hp in my ward. I flavored my ward to be air-based, so I had earth, wind, fire and ice. With resistance and a ward to absorb the damage, lets just say the dm eventually learned to focus attacks elsewhere. I missed all my attacks, but still dealt the most damage.
I used to play a Mark of Warding Dwarf Wizard (Abjurer) leveraging Arcane Ward and upcasted Armor of Agathys, and I must say — my party Fighter, Barbarian and Paladin companion were jealous sometimes. At level 5, I had 15 THP and retributive cold damage from AoA + 14 Arcane Ward HP. Melee enemies suffered big time.
When they realized I was really dangerous and tried to move out, I Booming Bladed them.
I was using underrated spells like Warding Wind to neutralize ranged enemies. Sleet Storm handled spellcasters.
And I still had access to all reality-bending Wizard spells to deal with all sort of scenario.
My DM straight out said "nah man, too op, even if legal"
And while I was slightly bummed I had to concede as he was right. it would ruin the game for everyone, especially if I were to take eltrich adept with armour of shadows.

You could also learn it with bard magical secrets.
Coo! Bard can get it, but I'm thinking a Sorcerer with extended meta magic and silver draconic ancestry could be even better.
